Bo Bounds: Politcal Pundit

Mitt Romney is like the Mack Brown of the Republican Party
I knew Out of Bounds was going to be worth tuning into this morning. Lately Bo hasn't been very secretive about his political leanings and where he was casting his vote for president. And when I woke up to these two tweets I knew I needed to hear what else was on his mind. His first guest didn't come on for almost 40 minutes so I was treated to his ramblings for most of the first hour.

The highlights:

I think Drug Dog meant *goodbye*
Bo starts the show off by saying, "Thanks for reelecting us as you college football show of choice." If sports talk radio host was regulated by the government, Bo would've been impeached already.

He built a whole segment around sports figures and their reaction to the election on twitter. And he teased  this segment  by saying reminding us that athletes and coaches are not as smart as you think. Yeah, well neither are radio hosts. He then proceeds to read tweets on-air from Lebron James, Brian Dawkins, Scott Fujita, Dick Vitale, Mike Tyson, Kevin Durant, etc. These were all positive reactions to the elections, congratulations to Obama, four more years type stuff.

So, during this, Bo pauses and says, "Remember most of these guys are in the 40%-50% tax bracket." When he finishes reading tweets (sidenote: how does he still have a job?), drops the hammer by saying "We recently had a guy give his parents his signing bonus. But he didn’t realize that taxes were gonna be taken out. So he was basically upside down while he was writing his parents a check.” There's some laughter in the background, and Bo wraps it up by saying "that just gives you an idea of what we’re dealing with."

That's really masterful. A slow build through all the tweets mostly in favor of President Obama. And then right at the end, he lets you know how stupid he thinks athletes are because they'll be paying hiher taxes and couldn't be happier about it. At least one NBA rookie, Royce White, is prepared for his new tax bracket and taking it all in stride.

But, the presidential election wasn't Bo's only focus this morning. He also covered the new marijuana laws that were passed in Colorado. His initial take on the situation "We may be seeing elite athletes moving to Colorado now. You have to ask yourself, maybe some builds a football powerhouse out there now. Maybe [Colorado State Coach] Jim McElwain saw the writing on the wall last year."

Let me just take a minute to wrap my head around this logic and then point out all the glaring holes in it. Bo thinks that because marijuana is legal in Colorado "elite" high school football players are going to move in droves to play for a Mountain West team. Because athletes like smoking weed, amirite?

In case you were wondering, marijuana remains on the NCAA's banned substance list. That list remained unchanged by the vote last night. Also, the law states that marijuana will be available to people over the age of 21 which is, you know, a little older than high school seniors.

Isn't that perfect how Bo's first thought was of the impact on college football. His warped thought process was on display again when he brought up Peyton Manning and painted him as a brilliant, forward-thinking businessman who exploited the soon-to-change marijuana regulations and bought into local Denver Papa John's franchises. Because to Bo, post-election Colorado looks like one big frat house and everyone has the munchies. Nevermind the tax implications that this new law could have to raise money things like education and health care. No, at OOB we remain focused on the  economic impact the law will is have on the pizza delivery industry.

One thing Bo didn't touch on was that Maine, Maryland, and Washington all voted to legalize same sex marriage last night. Are we going to start seeing all the elite gay football players signing with schools in those states? If you're a smart, forward business thinking you would've already opened Crate and Barrel stores in those states. Actually, an influx of gay players be the shot in the arm Randy Edsall's program needs.
