Developing quarterbacks the Y'all Way |
Usually I catch Out of Bounds during my commute to work, which is only about 10 or 12 minutes. And this typically occurs during the middle to end of the second hour of the broadcast. But since I’ve started writing this blog I feel l like I have an obligation to listen to a greater portion of the show. Maybe I’m missing something at the top of the first hour. Or, what if Bo is incredibly articulate and well-reasoned during the first hour and I've never heard it. Maybe I’m just catching him when he’s out of gas.
So this morning, out of fairness to Bo, I tuned in at 7:00 AM for the start of the show and listened to the first hour in its entirety. I also caught a good portion of the second hour before I left the house. I hope this sort of increased listening doesn’t lead to a Stockholm Syndrome situation.
Surprisingly, nothing egregious really jumped out at me this morning. Trust me, there was plenty of awful. Just not enough for me build a whole post around.
A few notes about this morning's show after the jump.
First Hour/First Segment - Bo spent 15 minutes (no lie, the ENTIRE first segment) patting himself on the back for yesterday’s show. Monday’s show was about the lack of quarterback prospects in the state of Mississippi. This just happened to come on a day when Ole Miss signed an out-of-state quarterback. Bo carried on like this justified his entire existence.
He was going on and on about “How funny is it that our show was on the money yesterday?” Why? Because Ole Miss signed a quarterback prospect from one of the other 49 states that aren't Mississippi? I could of told you Ole Miss was bringing in an outsider 6 months ago. Who was even the last UM quarterback from Mississippi?
Later in the hour, Bo had Mike Huguenin to talk college football. What other sports would you talk about in May? Look, I know the show is “driven by college football” and even the most mundane CFB topics increase listener discussion, but this is out of hand. The NBA playoffs are in full swing (with two road dogs winning last night), the Kentucky Derby is this weekend, Derek Lowe just got popped for a DUI. There are other sports radio topics. At least try and pretend to care about other sports.
To me, the highlight of Huguenin’s visit was an awful question from Bo about the University of Oregon. After the Ducks failed to have 28 picks in the first round of the NFL draft, Bo though the most apt comparison for them was a mid-major basketball team. I believe the question was something like, “So was Oregon this year more like a Butler-type team rather than a powerhouse like Alabama?” No. No, they’re not. They are a perennial contender is the second-best BCS conference, they had a Heisman finalist in the backfield, and they have best facilities in the country. There is nothing mid-major about the Oregon Ducks. Try again.
