I hope you drown in the sports think tank |
Why didn’t someone tell me Bo had written another masterpiece for yallsports.com? This thing was published on August 29. I can’t believe I left it untouched for almost 4 weeks. I’m not sure how I missed it. Oh now I remember. Yallsports.com is useless and shitty and I never visit the site.
Ramblings on Game week (@ 5am in the morning)
Notice the built-in excuse he includes here just in case the following is incoherent bullshit (it is). Don’t look too closely everybody, I basically wrote this with my eyes closed. Let’s not forget that Bo is AM radio host. At 5 AM he’s had a full night’s sleep and is up at a normal time. His 5 AM like 7 AM to you and me.
I was thinking about how much college football has changed since 1980. You know since Oklahoma, Nebraska & Alabama we’re dominating college football.
Let me just check...Yep OU, Alabama, and Nebraska area all preseason top 10 teams. My God, I can hardly recognize the modern football landscape today. Is Joe Paterno still at State College?
One program in the deep south was full of talent and had outstanding coaching: Alabama.
Did you enjoy that summary? Good because Alabama is never mentioned again here.
Then you had Nebraska and Tom Osborne. Osborne didn’t reach like Switzer. He signed what today would be considered highly rated 3-star players and redshirted everybody. 99% of the kids in Lincoln redshirted.
This is the kind of the bullshit that Bo always throws out in order to support his wild assertions. No one redshirts 99% of their team. And when Osborne finally broke through (back-to-back national championships in ’94 and ’95) his team was fucking stacked. Tommie Frazier was a top-3 recruit out of Florida, Ahman Green was a 3 year starter, and Grant Wistrom was a HS All American.
So while he didn’t have the pure athletes Oklahoma had – Nebraska relied on disciplined, good (not great) and smart redshirt juniors & Seniors.
Have you ever heard of Lawrence Phillips? After Phillips was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend, Osborne suspended him for 6 games (national media called it a slap on the wrist) and then named his the fucking starter for the Fiesta Bowl. The consummate disciplinarian.
Back then Oklahoma was the Dallas Cowboys just one step away from complete and total disaster which eventually happened & Nebraska was the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Why does Bo always feel the need to draw useless comparisons like this? They’re the Dallas Mavericks of the ACC. Which team can be the Butler or Gonzaga of college football?
One other gaping hole I want to point out in this analogy – The Steelers are not some fucking role model squeaky clean franchise. Just in the last two seasons Pittsburgh had a linebacker fined $100,000 for illegal hits (and then posed for a magazine cover holding two pistols), a quarterback accused of sexual assault (for a second time), and their #1 wide receiver was popped for DUI. Yeah, they’re really doing things the right way in Pittsburgh.
Even though Switzer dominated for a time in the 1970s & 1980s it was Osborne who had the last laugh. He stayed around longer and eventually won those coveted National Championships in the mid-1990s years after Switzer was run out of Norman for breaking every rule in the book
- Osborne: 3 national championships, 10 conference titles
- Switzer: 3 national championships, 9 conference titles...oh and a Super Bowl. I’m not sure who’s supposed to be laughing here?
Let’s just check this little nugget from Switzer’s Wikipedia page to be sure:
Switzer succeeded in getting the better of several famous contemporaries, including a 12–5 mark against Tom Osborne
I know this is supposed to be a free-form blog post from Bo. But this a perfect example of the kind of shit he says all time that is completely off-base, full of misremembered history, or just out of control wrong.
How about those "Yall Lifestyle" t-shirts? "Rather Southern, Slightly Sophisticated"??? Are people really buying those? I wouldn't be caught dead in one.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Bo, women didn't come to football games before 2000. I think the guy just makes shit up.
